This Month's Topic:
Code for Core Decompression of the Hip

Q: I recently did a core decompression of a hip for early AVN with bone grafting.  While this procedure is not “new”, I cannot find a CPT code to report the procedure. How do I report this to the payor?

A: You are correct. There are no CPT codes associated with a core decompression of the hip or knee.

To report a core decompression of the hip, use 27299 Unlisted procedure, pelvis or hip joint.

Should you do a core decompression of the knee, this would be reported using the unlisted knee code 27599, Unlisted procedure, femur or knee
